“You Can Write About Anything For Children, as Long as You’ve Got Humour”- Roald Dahl
Welcome to Books For Children by Jennifer Dovey
As a teacher and a mum, I’m interested in
books that foster the sheer joy of reading
wonderful and joyous stories.
From my own experience as an educator (since 2001)
and a mum to three girls,
I have found that the books that children are drawn to the most, are ones that are funny.
The Psychology Behind the Development of Humour in Children
It’s no surprise, that children love to laugh. Hence, children desire books that make them laugh.
I decided to do some research into the psychology behind the appeal of humour in children’s books. After all, to hear the sound of a child laughing in utter joy over a book is simply magical!

Why Do Children Find Poo So Hilarious?
What is it about the subject of poo (and other bodily functions – particularly things that are noisy and stinky) that kids find so wickedly funny?
I did some research into the subject as I was investigated the types of things that children find funny. And yep, poo is one of them!
TV Review –
The Allure of Squid Game: Are We Condemning Violence or Revelling in it?
I recently caved in to the popularity of Squid Game and decided to watch the series for myself.
Upon inspection, it made me question the reasons for the show’s sheer magnetism and the validity of its appeal.
To be fair, I am a fan of the genre but I also believe that if gore is going to be used, then it should serve a worthwhile purpose to justify the means.
Authors and Illustrators
Do you have your own ideas for a children’s book but don’t know where to start? If so, I know exactly how you feel.
There is a lot to do when it comes to putting a book together as any author will tell you, it is more than just writing a good story.
If you’re looking to get into the world of publishing, but don’t know where to start, below are the contact details of a consultancy service I used to help me with my first book as well as the details of the illustrator I used for ‘The Clever Little Mouse.’
Kelley Donner – Author & Consultant
Kelley Donner is an experienced author and illustrator who has successfully produced and sold thousands of wonderful books that children adore.
Kelley’s books are thoughtfully put together on meaningful topic with gorgeous illustrations.
Her best selling book, ‘A Very Corona Christmas: Santa Stays Home‘ had extensive media coverage and was a big hit with children, parents and educators.
In an effort to assist new and emerging authors, she now offers a consultancy service. Kelley’s range of consultancy packages help authors with self-publishing, book design and marketing.
I first contacted Kelley for consulting services back in January 2021 and she gave me some excellent advice, support and practical help.
She is a lovely person who is highly knowledgeable and super helpful. She is prompt to respond to messages and goes above and beyond your initial inquiry to guide you in the right direction and would answer all my questions with lengthy detail.
I would highly recommend her books and services – especially those who are looking to produce their first book, but don’t know where to start.
Izzy B – Author & Illustrator
Izzy B is a best selling author and illustrator for his own books plus illustrates books for other authors too.
He is a super fun and down-to-earth bloke who loves to entertain children through hilarious stories and amusing illustrations. He produces laugh-out-loud books that children like to read again and again.
The very witty, ‘A Tighty-Whitie Wind‘ tells the tale of a farmer whose undies blow around the farm and end up in all sorts of funny places.
I first got in contact with Izzy after I was looking for an illustrator who knew how to draw images with humor as this was a requirement for, ‘The Clever Little Mouse.’
Izzy is talented and highly capable. He has a lot of experience in the production of his own books and how to successfully market a book on You Tube or put a winning Kickstarter campaign together.
I personally found him easy to work with and one of the few illustrators who was willing to promote my book on his on website and social channels.
He has helped many authors with their creative vision and I’d highly recommend checking out his portfollio see if his drawings are the right fit for your next project.
