The Clever Little Mouse is written over 20 double sided, full colour pages. The entire narrative rhymes as rhyming words are fun and can assist with reading skills. For example when children are familiar with a nursery rhyme story, they learn to anticipate the upcoming rhyming word. They enjoy the pattern as they’re able to make predictions when they read.
This is important in their reading skill development.
Rhyme and rhythm also helps kids hear the sounds and syllables in words, which helps kids learn to read and to appreciate the writing craft. Children are more likely to enjoy a story if they can understand the words – particularly if they are reading the book to themselves without the support of an adult.
This is how the story opens……
To assist with how meaning is made and interpreted, the written text is paired beautifully with the fun illustrations. Children are familiar with pet animals – particularly, dogs, cats and mice. In this respect they are able to identify with a goofy dog and even a cranky cat.
Children love amusing animal antics and being a part of their hidden world. For this reason the book contains descriptions and images of the pets in amusing situations. The hairless cat feels both the cold and the sun quite strongly and even feels embarrassed about the absence of fur. It is like she is naked!
Likewise the dog, Duggie is silly and a bit crazy. He makes a big mess, eats flies as he can’t see properly and chases the poor little mouse.
Kids find big, goofy dogs lots of fun and will be able to identify with the crazy antics of Duggie.
