The Story
The Clever Little Mouse is a humorous tale of a little pet mouse who longs to make friends with the goofy dog and the grumpy cat she lives with.
The mouse is on a mission to make her life a bit more comfortable as she gets chased by the dog and she’s fearful that the cat might eat her.
The dog is very messy and shaggy (he can barely see and even swallows flies when he eats) and the cat is cranky because she is hairless and her skin burns in summer and freezes in winter. So the mouse comes up with a plan to please them both by using the excess fur from the dog to make clothes for the cat.
Mouse believes her troubles will be over as long as she solves the problems of the dog and the cat. However, things don’t always go quite according to plan and on the last page of the story, Mouse comes to realise that perhaps her living situation isn’t going to be as comfortable as she envisioned.

Catty and Duggie
In The Clever Little Mouse, the name of the cat is Catty (to reflect her nature) and the goofy dog is called Duggie.
Duggie makes a lot of mess, eats flies and likes to chase little Mouse.
Catty is cantankerous and feels naked without fur. In front of other cats she feels embarrassed to be seen ‘outside in the buff!’
Mouse and her Plan
In order to be a ‘Clever Little Mouse’ and solve the problem of living with a goofy dog and grumpy cat, Mouse devises a plan.
In the story, the plan is successful, however this doesn’t mean that all of her problems of living peacefully are solved.
In the end, while new friendships are formed, Mouse discovers that life sometimes gives you unexpected and unwanted challenges too.
Ultimately the story is silly and fun and is designed to make children laugh and be engaged. Most children love animals and can identify with pets. Plus there is a clear orientation, complication and resolution with an unexpected ending.
The Clever Little Mouse is designed to encourage children to read through an amusing animal story that rhymes and is visually appealing.
